The State of Texas Attorney General Takes Legal Action Against Tylenol Makers Over Autism Claims

Courtroom Proceedings
The Texas Attorney General, a Trump ally who is running for US Senate, claimed pharmaceutical manufacturers of concealing potential dangers of Tylenol

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is taking legal action against the manufacturers of acetaminophen, asserting the firms hid alleged dangers that the pain reliever presented to children's neurological development.

The court filing follows four weeks after President Donald Trump promoted an unverified association between using Tylenol - alternatively called paracetamol - throughout gestation and autism spectrum disorder in children.

The attorney general is suing Johnson & Johnson, which once produced the medication, the sole analgesic suggested for women during pregnancy, and the current manufacturer, which presently makes it.

In a declaration, he said they "betrayed America by making money from suffering and pushing pills ignoring the dangers."

The company asserts there is lacking scientific proof tying Tylenol to autism spectrum disorder.

"These manufacturers misled for generations, knowingly endangering millions to line their pockets," the attorney general, a Republican, declared.

The company said in a statement that it was "seriously troubled by the spread of false claims on the reliability of paracetamol and the potential impact that could have on the health of American women and children."

On its website, the company also said it had "continuously evaluated the pertinent research and there is insufficient valid information that shows a verified association between using paracetamol and autism spectrum disorder."

Associations representing medical professionals and health professionals share this view.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has said paracetamol - the primary component in acetaminophen - is one of the few options for expectant mothers to address discomfort and fever, which can present serious health risks if ignored.

"In more than two decades of investigation on the consumption of acetaminophen in gestation, zero credible investigations has successfully concluded that the consumption of acetaminophen in any period of gestation causes brain development issues in young ones," the association stated.

The court filing cites recent announcements from the previous government in asserting the drug is reportedly hazardous.

Last month, Trump caused concern from health experts when he told pregnant women to "fight like hell" not to use acetaminophen when sick.

The US Food and Drug Administration then released a statement that doctors should contemplate reducing the usage of acetaminophen, while also stating that "a proven link" between the medication and autism in children has remains unverified.

The Health Department head RFK Jr, who supervises the Food and Drug Administration, had promised in April to conduct "extensive scientific investigation" that would identify the origin of autism in a limited time.

But specialists advised that finding a single cause of autism - thought by researchers to be the consequence of a complicated interplay of inherited and external influences - would be difficult.

Autism spectrum disorder is a type of permanent neurological difference and condition that affects how persons experience and relate to the surroundings, and is diagnosed using doctors' observations.

In his court filing, the attorney general - a Trump ally who is running for US Senate - asserts Kenvue and Johnson & Johnson "intentionally overlooked and tried to quiet the research" around paracetamol and autism.

This legal action seeks to make the corporations "remove any marketing or advertising" that states acetaminophen is reliable for expectant mothers.

This legal action parallels the concerns of a group of guardians of children with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who sued the manufacturers of Tylenol in recently.

A federal judge rejected the case, stating studies from the plaintiffs' authorities was not conclusive.
